Den längsta natten
Karon Nilzén, Astrid Øster Mortensen & Emelié Sterner
15 December—8 Januari 2023

NEJD presents the group exhibition Den längsta natten with Karon Nilzén, Astrid Øster Mortensen and Emelié Sterner.

During the northern hemispheres darkest week, when the earths axis of rotation puts our heavenly body as far from the sun as possible. Does it paralize us; suffocate noiseless, shades us uninvitedly to later turn to dust. When the annual clock indicators once again points at noon, just when we thought we escaped the weeklong hour of the wolf, there it is again. Like a weighted blanket the darkness falls upon the atmosphere, over and over again. The exhibition Den längsta natten deals with light, darkness and time. Thru sculptures, sound and performance Karon Nilzén, Astrid Öster Mortensen and Emelié Sterner breaks down its natural laws, processes them into new ones, or investigates what lies within. The longest night is upon us and no one can escape the dull veil of solstice.

Karon Nilzén (b. 1994) graduated at Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Stockholm in 2022 and is currently active in Copenhagen. Nilzéns practice is mainly sculpture oriented with a focus on the body as a functional or dysfunctional part of the conscious. The body is extended through the materials often made of recycled /found objects. Material and object become disconnected from their common functions, merging into organisms, rejecting function and comprehension.

Astrid Øster Mortensen (b. 1998) is an artist and musician from Denmark. She has released two solo albums and is currently studying fine art at HDK-Valand.
Our voices sound different here and time surely moves differently when it snows. This is the dark part of the journey, the darkest part of the year. There is a hill and a mountain; there is a light in the ground. I have recorded the sound of this place and that same place inside of me.

Emelié Sterner (b. 1986) is an artist and actress working with installation, performance and performing arts. She received her bachelor in fine arts from HDK-Valand in 2022
The exhibition is supported by Göteborgs stad & KulturUngdom
