Iris Smeds
The angel of history fell, into the well
5th of December 2025 – 11th of January, 2026

In her new exhibition, Smeds develops the idea that the angel of history, while walking backward, fell into a well of love, isolation, and vast loneliness. At the same time, Smeds continues her storytelling about Niklas and Niklas's mother from her performance: "It looks like there is going to be a German medieval parade today as well”,  concluding that the angel of history was, in fact, Niklas's mother walking away from her son in order to see him, secretly longing to fall just to make time stop. From the well, shrimps crawl up the wall, turning from gray to pink, as the self-portrait of the young artist is in a staring competition with the wings of history. On the opening night, Smeds will perform her new piece, "So into you."

"The angel of history fell, into the well" is an exhibition about time travel, and it is the first time Smeds leans into her new project that revolves around historical narratives, the upside-downs of medieval parades, and how to maintain in a state of emergency.
Iris Smeds (b. 1984) lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. Her work has revolved around the individual's marketability and it's confusedness regarding belonging. It strives to examines our existence and society from a poetic and performative perspective. Smeds has a background in theatre and her project often blurs the boundaries between installation, performance and moving image, with a theatrical and surreal imagery . Since 2013, she has also run the one-woman punk band Vaska Fimpen.

The exhibition is supported by Göteborgs Stad and Kulturrådet
